My son send me a text the other day of an announcement from Facebook. One of his former teammates dad’s had passed away suddenly. I remember seeing him at games from time to time but never conversed with him. He left behind children and a wife. He looked about my age. I asked my son, “what did he die from?” My son said, “I don’t know dad, he just died.”
That seems so strange. He seemed healthy. He didn’t just….well, die..did he?. Something must have killed him. It is like when your car breaks down and goes kabloeey – either the engine breaks or a piston blows - something happens and it no longer works. I think it is the same with us. Something always kills us. My sister told me last weekend, “ain’t none of us getting out of this alive, John” and I agreed with her. Given death has many causes and they’re all rather specific, here’s an interesting, related question: What’s the biggest risk in your life?
Goke posed this question the other day. You may think it’s an accident, catching a fatal disease, or going bankrupt and ending up on the street, but none of them are very likely. The biggest risk in your life is far sneakier and not directly concerned with how you’ll die at all: regret. No matter how long your life will be, imagine arriving at the end of it and realizing: “Oh no, I wasted it!” Ironically, this is both far more dangerous and much more common than any sudden-death-scenario, yet we often completely ignore it.
So don’t be fooled. There is no right way to live, there is no wrong way to live, there is your way to live. Live it right, and when you get welcomed to the next life, home, walk right in. No regrets.
