I watched a video yesterday from Mark Manson, who was describing the benefits of an ordinary life. Too often, all of us get swept up in what success really means. We think if we are not skiing down the Swiss Alps or hanging ten in pipeline in Oahu then we are not a success. That somehow, we are failing. Nothing is further from the truth.
Let’s think about what ordinary really means, because the majority of us, well are. And that’s not a bad thing. The majority of us cannot play basketball like Michael Jordan; we do not have the acting ability of say Sigourney Weaver; we do not have the financial wherewithal of Warren Buffet. The majority of us have a couple things we are really good at, and then the others, we have average ability. But when you think about what it takes to be average.
In thinking abot an average today. For me today, I woke up, played with my dog, ate breakfast, watched some Korean baseball, am writing now, will work until dinner, workout, my wife and I will go for a walk with the dogs; will eat dinner, play some Deadball, talk to my wife and then go to bed. That’s a pretty full day right there. And during that day, I will have increased my writing ability, improved my skill-set at my job, increased the commitment to my wife by spending time with her, improved my health by exercising and become a better dog owner. If I do that day after day, at the end of this year, I should see marked improvements in all those categories.
When you think about it that way, isn’t ordinary extraordinary?
