#PositiveVibes - Do Anything

By John R. Nocero

"I can do anything." Well you can, and in all likelihood, you can't. Both are okay.

On the one hand, you can't just do anything you want to do. Okay, you can, if you are willing to suffer the consequences. All consequences are not always bad. Sometimes they are trade offs. If you want to pass the chemistry test, you may have to stay home all weekend and study. If you are talking about bucking the rules, remember there is a reason for why the rules are there in the first place - for the benefit of everything.

The complexity of today’s business environment can easily throw any professional for a loop if they are not prepared. To combat this, some organizations wrap a policy around everything and call it done rather than critically thinking about a practical solution. The problem with this approach is that you are limiting interaction with the critical stakeholders. There is never a one size fits all approach. When this is your course of action, you may not always get the best solution so you may want to think about seeing things through the eyes of the people on the front lines. That may help you create a policy that everyone buys into because they were involved in its creation.

From a personal standpoint, we are all not created equal and this is a great thing. There are people who are better writers, orators, communicators, organizers - you get the idea. With everyone on the same team with the diverse skill sets, you fill each other's gaps. Celebrate what you do well but also celebrate what your TEAM does well.

Maybe you can do anything after all, with commitment and teamwork.
