Today a candidate has a final interview for a VP for Europe position. This role is within a $700m turnover medical devices company that are generally perceived as being a bit faceless and corporate. The candidate will meet 4 people throughout a long day of potentially testing interviews.

The candidate called me at 0801 UK time. My cynical Monday morning heart sank. Is she OK? Can she not attend?

She called to say she had arrived 60 mins early for the interview at the European headquarters. The EMEA CEO met her personally in reception and in order to make her day as comfortable as possible, gave her a canteen card with €50 credit for water, snacks, coffee and lunch. The card had been programmed to automatically order coffee to her preference from machines and in the central company canteen. (they made a note of how she took it last time she met them). Nice touch!

The candidate was at ease, comfortable happy. The hiring company was only going to see the best version of the candidate and equally present themselves in good light. A nice lesson in how to host an interview!

A good example to be shared with hiring Companies HR team. Unfortunately Not common and a good comfortable, friendly and happy welcome can change the image and perception of any candidate!
