Positive thinking, strategic planning can mean the difference in your firms' economic performance.

For many HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical contractors there is a void for the long-term outlook of your firm. The difference between a happier owner and a stressed one comes down to the following.

  • A positive belief in yourself and staff
  • Cohesive sales and marketing plan.
  • Written goals that you measure and use as a map as well as an indicator that an alteration is required.

The first reason for this, is that many companies were started with the simple goal of making a living rather than creating a company that employs many tradespeople, salespeople, dispatchers, estimators and managers.

Once you actually realize that you run a company and not a place where people come to work, you are on your way to creating a profitable business. The second decision is to decide how you are going to turn your current operation into a professional company.

If you're thinking to yourself, I am smart enough to do what needs to be done myself. You purchase books on business or go to your local community college where you take a few business classes.

If you are as remarkable a businessperson as you were a tradesperson, you are blessed. For the rest of the leaders, you need to decide if you should focus on what you know and hire a business coach. If you're not familiar with what a business coach is and where to find the one for you, you are not alone.

A business coach is some one that has experience in many aspects of operating a company. They should have a combination of both firsthand industry knowledge as well as training in finance, operations, sales, marketing, key performance indicators and a network of other professionals with an in-depth knowledge on a specific area. We help put your issues into perspective. We also help you define your goals and the steps required to make them come try.

When you run a small to mid sized company -you may be wearing man hats. The issue is that the vast majority of people do not know how to set up a time management strategy or blocks of time. They are busy putting fires out. They also have no clear path to reach a perceived goal.

The first thing I like to find out is what does that person envision their company to look like in five years-employee head count, number of offices,taking it further what you want to have as a salary, where do you want to live.

It would be nice if you did not have to plan for it, someone walk up and said hi your nice here is $20,000,000. Since that is a great fantasy or movie you know you need to work for it.

As a coach I want to take what you told me, and then compare what you said to the current situation. We then fill in the blanks- as to what needs to be accoplished. How do you think it should be accomplished. I also ask a new question since Covid came-what if blank happens how will it effect your firm, and what can be done to take advantage of the situation.

Another thing I beleive a coach should be a quasi -therapist. Why because evey businss goes through a crisis. You need some one to help steady your hand, some one not involved in the business that can think more rational than you might be, at the current time.

There are many great coaches, so selecting one comes down to personality-can you work with this person, Availability-do they have the time to spend with you, past experience. Although I am just beginning my coaching carreer I have been through twenty five years, heading up various departments with positive track records for each one.
