BE A POSITIVE DEVIANT – AND CHANGE THE WORLD

A positive deviant is someone who is faced with the same problems and challenges as all of us, may be confronted with even greater than reasonable constraints, and even deprived of necessary resources - yet does remarkable work. Like a root that springs up out of parched ground, they make much out of little and change the world.

Bob Dotson, NBC news correspondent and author of American Story: A Lifetime Search for Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things, points out many positive deviants: The blind man to be the first to kayak the Grand Canyon, the swim instructor with MS who taught 1000s of disabled children to swim, the police officer who works in a hospital where children are dying and raises money for them to take their dream vacation before they pass on, the grandmother who ends up taking custody of her child’s crack baby and turns it into a mission where she cares for hundreds of crack babies, and a single women of modest means who manages to fill a 7000 sq. foot warehouse full of clothes and gifts for needy kids.

What can you do to be a deviant and change the world?
