Adam Grant 's words "It's better to test and learn than to never test at all" triggered a lot of thoughts on soliciting feedback.
Recall an amazing webinar that Marshall Goldsmith had moderated during the pandemic around blindspots which had some discussions about the positives around blindspots!
A very simple and effective tool, the Johari Window has been there for a long time now & people have vouched for the ease with which we can use it. A tool that takes us on a journey inward that truly helps us discover the blind spots within is what made the 4 quadrants an easy tool to understand & use.
This is one of my favorite tools that I use with my coachees. Soliciting feedback becomes important when we want to see areas that will help our growth. While sometimes feedback can be biased, it is up to the recipient how he takes it. Once you reach a level of leadership, it is difficult to receive feedback. It may be because people around you are not sure how you will receive it. So being open & unbiased when you receive feedback helps. However, give room for benefit of the doubt.
I remember how when I once delivered a virtual talk that was appreciated with a lot of messages on my personal chat, I decided to find out what was good from the senior most of my colleagues. I was surprised when I asked Gopal," Can you tell me what can I replicate the next time I speak?". His reply was specific, clear, pointed & really useful. Had I not asked him for the feedback, probably I would have missed out on the nuggets that he so generously shared. From then on I have clearly understood the why of the ask for feedback. Loved the learnings & the action then on. Blindspots are after all not areas of Improvement only, they are areas to replicate too!
However, the power of the recipient is the power of CHOICE! ?Viktor Frankl sums it up powerfully, "Everything can be taken away from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedom – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way."
A reminder is important here, as to whose feedback we are valuing. Wisdom is in picking up the feedback from those who matter and taking it forward. Sometimes not all feedback is genuine or from a space of growth. This scene from "Pursuit of Happiness" explains it clearly.
So remember if you want to improve know it is worth the risk, just be wise in choosing whom you pick the advice from! Dip into the #voiceinme to be your best version always!
Listening to feedback & the?#voiceinme ?has been magical.
