Positioning Yourself for Global Relevance

Positioning Yourself for Global Relevance

At the recent LEAD Conference held at Bowen University in Nigeria, I delivered a talk on the importance of positioning oneself for global relevance in today's ever-evolving world. Drawing on analogies from chess, nature, and modern-day branding, I engaged the audience with insightful perspectives and actionable advice. I have decided to share those gems with you.

Tell yourself the truth about your Strengths, Weaknesses & Passions because it all starts with you

In my experience mentoring younger people, I have observed the need for self awareness and confidence against the need for social approval and blind followership. This was why I emphasized the significance of self-awareness as the foundation for personal development. Understanding one's strengths, weaknesses, and passions is crucial for positioning oneself effectively. I likened this to a pawn on a chessboard, highlighting that with the right moves and strategies, a pawn can transform into a queen, symbolizing one's highest potential. The whole essence of positioning is to occupy a favorable mental space in the minds of people within the space you intend to play. This would focus on building recognition, distinction and preference over several engagements.

Be as connected as the fungi and leverage people and platforms for success

Networking was identified as a key factor in one's journey to success. I compared this to the support pieces on a chessboard, emphasizing the importance of finding mentors and learning from others' experiences. Owning one's journey involves making decisions that align with the vision of becoming globally relevant, recognizing the need for continuous growth and adaptation.

Top skills and skills groups rising into prominence by 2025 according to World Economic Forum

In a post-COVID world, digital savvy is no longer optional. I highlighted the top skills identified by the World Economic Forum as critical for success, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-management. I encouraged the audience to align their studies with these skills to remain competitive in the global landscape.

Further more, drawing from the wisdom of David Aaker, I warned against creating irrelevant or outdated value, emphasizing the importance of staying relevant and consistent. Over-positioning, overpricing, and engaging in antisocial conversations were also identified as pitfalls to be avoided.

Grow like a tree and not a flower

To stay relevant, I stressed the importance of being a lifelong learner, keeping abreast of global trends, and identifying market opportunities. I advised the audience to leverage people and platforms to amplify their unique value proposition, ensuring that they are known for their expertise and value.

In conclusion, it was great to see young minds organize such an event. Their coordination was nothing short of impeccable. I enjoyed the engagement with the attendees during and after the event. It gives me so much hope for the future of Africa. My talk resonated deeply with the audience, inspiring them to take charge of their personal and professional development. By understanding the importance of self-awareness, networking, and continuous learning, individuals can position themselves for global relevance and success in an ever-evolving world This was evident in the feedback I got from the organisers and attendees alike.

Grow like a tree and not a flower! This right here is my take home from this article. Very spot on phrase and if I could speak to that I’d say that growing as a flower is so beautiful and radiant in its beauty and glory outwardly but has a very short life-span or could even wither in no time compare to growing as a tree that may not be so beautiful and radiant outwardly but strong and flourishing inwardly, lasting for decades upon decades while blessing the world with its fruits to eat which is sharing from your well of knowledge to others, it’s leaves as shade meaning you protect your space and those who come to you for help, it’s branches serves as a ladder to get to the tree top which meaning as a tree, you must be reachable and communicate appropriately too. Growing like a tree brings a different perspective to one’s strength, weaknesses and passions. Thanks for sharing your experience! Boss
