The next step for gaining trust quickly is by measuring a person’s communication style. If the person is speaking very softly and gently to you it's important that you speak softly and gently to them. If you're going to be very loud and rowdy, they might just feel very uncomfortable and would not like to communicate further with you. So, my rule of thumb is that I try to match my energy with the person with whom I'm talking to. So, if the person is energetic, I am also energetic and if they are slightly low on the energy, I try to be very soft and very gentle with the other person.
Are you wondering why this is necessary? It is because your way of speaking is going to make the other person comfortable. If you're soft they would like it and provided if they are also soft. If they’re talking too loudly, you should toss back in their tone so that they can understand you. Communication style goes wrong when you overboard. Try to be in middle and more natural. Practice this often with your everyday communications and don't go overboard.
Watch other person's communication style by paying close attention to the person talking to you. You should constantly have eye contact with the person with whom you're talking to. You should listen to them very carefully and look at them when they are talking to you instead of searching around for something else. Providing eye contact and nodding is important in ensuring that the person believes in what you’re saying. Understanding this feeling is very important to trusting a person.
Only when a person knows that you understand them, they can trust you. So, the next time you're talking to someone, look into their eyes. Another way to build trust is to fulfill your promises that you make. At times, when you cannot because of some valid reasons, try your best to communicate that. Let me give you an example, if you plan a vacation with your friends and because of some real reason you cannot make it.?
Even then if you tell your friends that you cannot come, then it’s okay, they will still trust you and they can forgive you. But if this happens again the next time, then they might be nice and let it go again. However, if this is very repetitive and you keep canceling your plans with your friends, that's when they will lose trust in you and they will not trust you enough. Also, with your clients if for some reason you cannot make it, for maybe because of some serious reason, let's say your phone's battery died out and you had a flat tire and you have no way to contact your clients.

Then the responsible thing to do is to write an email and explain your reason for not being able to make it but the key here is that you should not do this repeatedly. Repetition of such actions can really hamper the trust which other people have on you. To make sure that you don't repeat these actions and build trust, you have to admit your mistakes and take responsibility.

2 年Very good article Elona. I speak about communication a lot. I agree with some points that are especially right true even on the internet. That seems to be the way most people are speaking now. Virtually, even eye contact with the camera is important. I practice this and sometimes see my eyes wandering on camera, but I would not do this in person. Focus is important for trust.
