Positioning Your Nest???
I was weeding the side garden when I saw it. The nest was lying on its side on the stone path. We’d had a major thunderstorm, rain and high winds the night before. I guessed that the nest must have fallen out the protective arms of the twelve foot tall arborvitae. I hunted around for little blue eggs and I spotted one under a leaf, and then another close by, they were both cracked. I looked up in the sky hoping that the parents were close by.
The last time I saw a nest this close up was when I was very young. My brother and I?were always outside exploring, digging and gathering leaves and flowers. I remember one summer afternoon we found a nest on the ground with a baby bird. My mother, the school nurse,?helped us feed it with an eye dropper filled with sugar water. After a few days of trying to save it, it died. We put it in a Stride Rite shoebox and buried it in a hole on the side of our house.
Yesterday, as I held the tiny nest in my hands, I noticed that the foundation was constructed of twigs and small branches, forming a sturdy base. The inside of the nest was lined?with softer materials, grass, leaves, moss, and even a pink hair ribbon providing for a cozy and comfortable interior for the eggs. The weave was secure and seamless, a beautiful example of nature’s ingenuity and the tireless efforts of this remarkable mother robin.
The robin's nest reminds me of a foundation for a successful coaching business
