POSITION FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL

[7] Ways to help support first-year students on your campus and to help them to achieve academic success.

Higher education professionals should see themselves as an x-factor in helping to set students up for success.

Starting college for some students is much more challenging than others, but you should not assume they know all they need to know to achieve academic success. The first year of college can be daunting for some students.

Nonetheless, in helping first-year students to achieve success, starting the "process of support" before they get on campus can help set up the students for success. To increase student retention and graduation rates at your institution, it is critical to creating a system to support first-year college students.

Never let because you had a smooth transition make you think the students you are entrusted to serve will too. It can be challenging for first-year students to adjust to their new environment and simultaneously have it difficult to integrate into the campus community.

Helping first-year students to achieve academic success:

1.???????Help students make the connection with supportive resources that are available for them.

2.???????Offer first-year experience programs which include mentoring and learning communities. Also, with a focus on preparing students, you want to provide ways for them to develop a global perspective.

3.???????Instructors can guide students by providing clear expectations (goals) and how they can be reached and offering helpful feedback often, especially in the early stages.

4.???????Help the students early to become aware of the support system available and encourage them to use them because they are in place for their success.

5.???????Remove institutional obstacles to student success, especially for underrepresented student populations.

6.???????Encourage students to participate in campus activities and learn about available groups to join, and doing so is a good way for new students to develop a sense of belonging.

7.???????Encourage professors to include student-centered learning in their syllabus and assignments as a big part of the process in higher education is to empower students.

Higher education professionals have to realize the power they have in helping to transform their institutions. Nonetheless, for significant changes to happen, especially in retention and graduation rates, H.E.P. have to be intentional and willing to work together for one common goal.
