POSCO Future M, with support from the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, has successfully localized the manufacturing technology for electrode rods, a key material in steel production, after 4 years and 9 months of research. Electrode rods are essential for processes such as melting scrap iron or removing impurities from molten metal. This achievement is expected to be a significant turning point in stabilizing the supply chain of the domestic steel industry, which previously relied entirely on imports.
In the past, the steel industry faced challenges due to shortages of Chinese electrode rods and export restrictions from Japan. However, this localization effort now enables improved production efficiency for electric furnace steelmakers and enhances the competitiveness of the domestic steel industry. POSCO Future M plans to evaluate the commercialization of this technology based on market conditions and strengthen group-wide collaboration to establish low-carbon steelmaking processes.
