Portuguese National Pantheon celebrates 100 years with exhibition

The Portuguese National Pantheon inaugurated on December 13 the exhibition "Kings and Heroes - The Pantheons in Portugal" which marks the 100th anniversary of the choice of the Church of Santa Engrácia for the National Pantheon and the 50th anniversary of its inauguration.

For the exhibition were selected original pieces belonging to some of the most important museums, monuments and Portuguese palaces, which include examples of painting, goldsmithing, sculpture, textiles and books. It is a show of emblematic pieces, clad with historical, symbolic and artistic value, allusive to the personalities integrated in the various Pantheons.

The initiative, which aims to address the different sites that have been chosen for the Pantheons over time, finally leads us to the concept of the National Pantheon and will be open to the public until May 7, 2017.

Enjoy one of the most original and emblematic monuments of the city of Lisbon.

The beginning of its history dates back to the 16th century, when it was built by the Infanta D. Maria, daughter of D. Manuel I, and after a contempt, the works of conclusion dragged on until the 20th century, giving place to the no less emblematic Expression "Works of Santa Engrácia", meaning something that "nuca mais" has an end.
