There are requirements that one must possess before one can apply for a Portuguese visa and those requirements are outlined below:
- An International passport: This is where the visa would be stamped and you must present this by the time you get to the border.
- Passport: You must present a passport that means the required size and this is usually attached to the Visa application form.
- Visa Application form: The visa application form must be filled and submitted before your visa can be processed.
- Proof of sufficient funds: Every traveler must prove that they are able to take care of their needs during their stay in the country.
- Proof of accommodation; This is to prove that you have a place to reside and this can include a hotel reservation or letter of invitation if you were invited by someone.
- Medical Insurance: This is to cover your medical expenses while in Portugal and it is expected to cover a certain amount of expenses.
- Travel Itinerary: This is to prove that you have booked a flight to enter Portugal and also return also, note that you can obtain this without paying for the flight.
The Portuguese visa application form can be obtained from the embassy in your country also, and it can be downloaded online here. For minors, the form is meant to be signed by the person exercising authority over them.
As we stated earlier, there are various visa types, and the one you're issued is hugely dependent on the purpose of your visit to Portugal. There are generally four categories of visas that can be issued to those entering Portugal namely:
- Schengen Visa: A Schengen visa is a visa that allows the holder to enter Portugal for almost 90 days within the space of 180 days. Only those from the Schengen area are eligible to apply for the Schengen Visa.
- Long stay visa/National Visa: The long stay visa is for those who would love to stay in Portugal for more than 90 days. There are different categories of Long stay visa which we have outlined below:
- Portugal Student Visa: This visa is designed for students who have been offered admission into institutions in Portugal.
- Portugal Work Visa: This visa is for nationals of non-EU Countries that have been offered employment in Portugal
- Portugal Retirement Visa: This visa is for those planning on retiring in Portugal. You must prove that you have enough funds to stay in Portugal
- Portugal Family Visa: This visa is for non-EU nationals who would love to join their family in Portugal.
- Airport Transit Visa: A transit visa is for those who would be passing through Portugal to get to their destination. The visa is valid for a day and only nationals of the following countries are expected to apply for the Transit visa: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, and Sri Lanka
- Golden Visa: The Golden visa is a program that allows people to invest a certain amount of money in Portugal and in return, they are awarded residency or citizenship.
