Portrait of a Graduate: A Massachusetts School District's North Star

What does it take to redefine success in public education? For Bill Runey, Superintendent of the Dighton Rehoboth Regional Schools in Massachusetts, the answer is clear: collaboration, vision, and community engagement.

When Bill arrived at the district shortly after the pandemic, he encountered a community yearning for structure and direction. Recognizing the need for a unified vision, he spearheaded the creation of the Portrait of a Graduate—a framework that identifies the key traits students need to succeed, from collaboration to communication and self-awareness.

“It’s our North Star,” Bill explained. “We can tie all our teaching and learning back to it.”

Developing this vision was no small feat. Bill’s team engaged students, staff, families, and local stakeholders to ensure the Portrait of a Graduate reflected the community’s shared values. This initiative has become a touchstone for the district, shaping classroom practices and strengthening bonds between schools and families.

Bill’s leadership extends beyond the classroom. He has nurtured partnerships with local colleges, universities, and industry leaders, ensuring students are workforce-ready. The district’s robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs give students hands-on experience, whether they choose college, direct-to-industry careers, or a gap year to explore their options.

“We have CTE advisors helping us stay on the cutting edge of skills and techniques,” Bill shared. “These partnerships help us prepare students for life after high school.”

Bill’s passion for public education is rooted in personal experience. Inspired by his late father, a teacher and coach, Bill has dedicated 37 years to education. His story is a testament to the power of leadership and the enduring impact of community-driven initiatives.
