Port of Savannah gets new Ship-to-shore Cranes
Four new Super Post-Panamax ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes have arrived at the Port of Savannah, the Georgia Ports Authority announced. The new additions bring the port’s total crane fleet to 34.“Along with the completion of our project to improve Berth 1, these cranes will help deliver faster turn times to our ocean carrier customers, including the largest vessels calling on the U.S. East Coast,” said Griff Lynch, Georgia Ports Authority president and CEO. Two cranes stand 295 feet tall, and the other two reach 306 feet at their highest points, handling 22 and 24 containers across, respectively. The taller cranes will be stationed at Berth 1, while the others will be positioned at Berth 9 on the upriver section of the terminal. The implementation of these cranes, combined with dock improvements, will increase the Garden City Terminal’s annual capacity by 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containerized cargo. The new equipment is part of the port authority's $1.9 billion infrastructure improvement plan, aimed at keeping up with future supply chain needs.
