Port Kembla Ship Fire
I’d like to thank all firefighters involved in the shipping fire in Port Kembla for their efforts. Crews worked tirelessly for three days to extinguish the blaze and protect the community and environment. The extensive fire, which started on a conveyor belt before travelling to the ship’s cargo hold, was difficult to access. Firefighters worked around the clock, battling the blaze from the wharf and deck of the ship whilst tug boats applied water onto the outside of the ship to keep its fuel tanks cool. FRNSW also utilised infrared drones to determine fire spread and heat. Crews eventually extinguished the main blaze after applying high-expansion foam to the area.
The incident is not yet fully resolved and our crews as well as supporting agencies remain focussed on bringing the remaining issues to a close
The multi-agency operation, which included NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, Port Authority NSW, NSW Environment Protection Authority, Roads and Maritime Services as well as other key stakeholders, is very challenging but proving that FRNSW is #PreparedForAnything.
