Port Congestion | Week 46 line-up Multiple Australian Ports are Experiencing Strikes, and the Typhoon May Affect Port Operations

Event 1: Multiple Australian Ports Face Strike Crisis

Australia's major ports are in a logistics predicament due to labor disputes. Recently, the world's leading ocean freight forwarders announced that multiple ports in Australia initiated a seven-day strike starting from November 8th.

The ports involved include important logistics hubs such as Brisbane, Darwin, Kembla, and Adelaide. This action covers multiple job categories and different working hours at the ports, which is expected to significantly slow down the processing of goods. Especially with the upcoming holiday shopping peak, both consumers and businesses may be affected by logistics delays.

Brisbane Port is the third busiest and the fastest-growing container port in Australia, with main imports including wool, meat, and fruits. Kembla Port is the fifth-largest coal export port in Australia and one of the top twenty bulk ports in the world.

Event 2: Typhoon "Usagi" Approaches

In the early morning of November 12th, Typhoon "Usagi," the 25th of the year, formed.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency's data on November 12th, Typhoon Usagi is moving westward at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour. It is estimated that it may approach the northern part of Luzon Island in the Philippines early in the morning of the 15th, turn northward towards the southeastern sea off Taiwan on the 16th, and the entire Taiwan will be within the typhoon's storm warning range on Saturday and Sunday.

Experts analyze that, according to the path provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency, if the northern cold high pressure comes down early, the typhoon will follow the edge of the high pressure and move northeastward from the eastern sea off Taiwan; if the high-pressure system has not yet arrived, after the typhoon reaches the northern part of Luzon Island in the Philippines on Thursday, it may pass through Taiwan and move northward.

According to the current predicted path, some ports in Taiwan may be affected, and precautions should be taken in advance.

According to the latest foreign news, on November 10th, the Montreal dockworkers' union rejected the final offer made by the Maritime Employers Association (MEA), with over 99% of members voting against the proposal and declaring a strike starting from 9 PM on November 10th.

On November 12th, as the port workers' strike in two major Canadian cities entered its seventh day with negotiations at an impasse, Canada's Minister of Labour called on the Canada Industrial Relations Board to order an end to the union employees' strike and to resume port operations in Montreal, Vancouver, and Prince Rupert in British Columbia.
