Porsche Doubling Down, Plans Cayenne EV, and New High-Performance Electric SUV

Looking to expand its EV imprint in the United States and elsewhere, Porsche has announced two new electric additions to their vehicle lineup -- an EV version of the popular Porsche Cayenne and as-yet-unnamed high-performance electric SUV series.

These two models will be the third and fourth EVs in Porsche’s brand-new electric lineup, following the 2024 release of the Macan EV and an all-electric 718.

According to Oliver Blume, Volkswagen CEO, and Porsche executive chairman, the goal is to build a diverse lineup of electric SUVs that ticks all the boxes. The Macan will be Porsche’s compact SUV offering, the fully-electric Cayenne will be the company’s midsize offering, and the new high-performance SUV will take the ultra-luxury approach.

Per recent speculation and reports on Porsche's brand-new luxury SUV, the new model will be a super-spacious seven-seater perfect for large families. Blume didn't show all of Porsche's hand in his recent press release. Yet, he did say the SUV will provide "a completely new experience" on the interior, automated driving functionality, and an exterior in line with "the typical Porsche flyline."

Porsche's parent company, Volkswagen, is developing an SSP EV platform for its vehicles and the new Porsche SUV offering. The successor to the company's MEB platform, the SSP project has been delayed multiple times due to software issues -- delaying the debut of Volkswagen's long-awaited "Project Trinity" EV.

Other luxury vehicle companies like BMW and Mercedes-Benz are working to expand and diversify their EV offerings. The hope is to jump on the growing demand for top-shelf EVs around the globe, especially in the United States and China. As for Porsche, the aim is to create a sales inventory that's 80% fully electric by 2030.

Porsche's only fully-electric model, the Taycan sport sedan, has been surpassed in hype and functionality by other EV offerings in the marketplace. With an upcoming slate of four potential top-sellers, Porsche looks to position itself ahead of the curve as the EV revolution kicks into high gear.
