Our new multiscale study published in #EngineeringGeology of @Elsevier_Eng shows excess pore pressure change can lead to transitional evolution of deformation band patterns in saturated sandstone, e.g., from #CompactionBand to #ShearBand as shown above. We demonstrate the classic effective stress should be used in conjunction with porosity as key state variables for studying compaction bands in saturated sandstones.
