#PORAC Research Confirms Critical Role of School Resource Officers
PORAC (Peace Officers Research Association of California) published a new research brief reaffirming the critical role that School Resource Officers (SROs) play in promoting a safe learning environment for students across California. As safety concerns from both parents and teachers reach unprecedented levels, it’s more important now than ever that we ensure the officers tasked with protecting California’s future have the training resources they need to succeed. Some key insights from the brief:
?? In a recent #Gallup poll, 44% of parents expressed worry about their children’s safety, and 20% stated their children expressed concerns about feeling unsafe at school.
??♂? According to Secret Service data, from 2006-2018, SROs had a direct role in preventing nearly one-third of all thwarted school attacks.
?? Beyond protection, SROs foster positive relationships with students and play a multifaceted role on school campuses – serving as mentors, educators, and trusted community figures to help set our next generation up for success.
Our next generation deserves a learning environment that doesn’t require active shooter drills. We as parents deserve to have peace of mind that our children are safe at school. That’s why #PORAC is advocating for increased resources, standardized State and federal training, and tailored response plans that promote a safe and supportive school environment for all students. Let's work together to make sure that all students have the opportunity to grow and thrive without fear.
