POP: Our 100% Recyclable Collection

What is the POP Collection made from?

Our POP Collection is made with a roughly 50/50 blend of virgin PET and recycled PET (rPET). The exact percentage varies slightly from production run to production run, governed by the clarity & quality of the rPET that is sourced.

Why 50% RPET?

There is currently a significant variance in the quality of rPET, and currently using a higher percentage of rPET would cloud, yellow, or generally discolor our glasses. We struck the 50/50 balance between the two materials in order to maintain the clarity of the glasses while also using post-consumer material, although we aim to increase the percentage of rPET as refining processes improve.

Why is using RPET more sustainable than virgin PET?

Reclaiming PET material requires significantly less energy compared to producing virgin PET material. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a mixture of MEG and PTA refined from crude oil which utilizes much more energy throughout the refining process when compared to rPET’s washing and regrind process. rPET is infinitely recyclable and is used in many capacities, including tire walls, a wide variety of clothing, artificial turf, wigs, and of course TOSSWARE. PET is generated as a fortunate byproduct of petroleum refinement, meaning less waste – especially when recycled effectively and reused infinitely.

Can POP be recycled?

Yes. Our POP Collection is stamped with the #1 recycling symbol, making it eligible for recycling across the nation. If your local recycling center provides a bin or a collection point, any plastics with a recycling logo and rating imprinted on the product should be received and sorted once it reaches the center. Although the sorting technology used differs from one recycling center to another, one thing for sure is that PET is the most sought-after plastic to sort through and reclaim due to its secondary market value and its infinite recyclability.

What are your plans to become a circular brand?

By 2030, we are committed to offering a 100% rPET product. This means creating recyclable products out of fully reclaimed material. We are currently in conversation with several providers of ethically sourced, recycled PET that also serve a higher mission of cleaning and protecting our environment. Our vision is that of a production process that fully embraces the concept of infinitely recyclable rPET products.
