Pooh...piglet...and the grasshopper

Growing up I spent a lot of my time reading…. from an early age, books would call out to me, with more color, details and insight every time I read or re-read them! In a conversation with a team member who reads short stories to her toddler, the moral of the Grasshopper and the Ant was re-interpreted… “But, I want to enjoy life’s adventures, explore what I could do, make connections and be inclusive, stand-out and be different just like the grasshopper!”
Would you agree, that fiction stories such as these and even real life stories have helped (consciously or sub-consciously) shape our imagination, sense of right & wrong and aspirations for life ?
Today, I share with you some modern stories that capture this essence and are open to your interpretation, depending on which lens (of life) you have on…
- Harold and the Purple Crayon, Crockett Johnson: With crayon in hand, Harold creates the world around him, making things up as he goes. When there's no moon to light the way, he draws it. When he gets hungry, he draws some pie.
What is your purple crayon?
“Today you are you, that is truer than true, there is no one alive that is youer than you” – Dr. Seuss
- We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, Michael Rosen: As this group of intrepid bear hunters makes its way closer to the bear, they encounter a series of obstacles: tall grass, mud, a dark forest. Each time, they meet the challenge the same way.
What do you think during difficult times?
“Everything is a learning experience” – Angus T. Jones
- The Phantom Tollbooth, Norton Juster: After a bored Milo receives a mysterious and magical tollbooth, it sets him on an adventure through the Kingdom of Wisdom. Along the way, he encounters a world unlike his own, filled with witty wordplay, curious rhetoric and a quest to save the exiled princesses Rhyme and Reason.
What transforms your world?
“What day is it” – Pooh Bear / “Today” said Piglet / “Ah,” said Poo, “my favorite day”
