Poo Fighters From Space Help Create Safe Transplantations

Poo fighters! One of kid's - and grown up's - first question when meeting an astronaut is how they manage to go to the toilet in space? Well, growns up's tend to THINK the question, while kids usually say it out LOUD?
The answer to this question will be answered in another newsletter. Here's the some really cool stuff that space toilets has brought back to earth:
That technology developed for space toilets can provide safer bone marrow transplants is perhaps one of the best examples of how difficult it is to predict where cutting-edge technology will find an application. Since a spacecraft is a closed system, it is very important that the waste from toilets is treated in a safe manner. Contamination from the waste can otherwise endanger the entire mission.
Bone marrow transplant wards must also be extremely clean. This is because the patients there have an artificially weakened immune system in order for the transplant to be carried out. By using technology developed for the space toilets, it is possible to have toilets close to the patients without the risk of bacteria from the waste causing infections or other problems.
This is also a reminder of that when transferring space tech to earth, you always have to think a few steps ahead, and try to look around corners to innovate right.
