This week, we celebrate Pongal—a Hindu harvest festival cherished by South Indians, especially in Tamil Nadu. Pongal is a vibrant expression of gratitude, community, and joy. Over three days, families and communities come together to honour the Sun God, the forces of nature, farm animals, and everyone who contributes to agriculture.
The word “Pongal” itself means “overflowing with joy.” This expression perfectly reflects the essence of this celebration—a time to revel in the abundance of life and show appreciation for the harvest that sustains us. The festival's highlight is cooking a traditional sweet dish called “Pongal,” made with jaggery, rice, and lentils. What makes it even more special is how it’s prepared: outdoors, in clay pots, with the dish bubbling over as a symbol of prosperity.
Of course, except in rural areas, we all cook Pongal these days indoors and in pressure cookers. Hey, life pressures, and who can do Pongal outdoors in the UK in this cold weather?
Traditions That Overflow with Joy
The beauty of Pongal lies in its traditions, each filled with symbolic meaning.
Homes are adorned with Kolams, intricate and colourful patterns drawn with powdered paint or rice flour. These patterns, painstakingly crafted at dawn, are believed to invite prosperity and joy into the household.
Fresh sugarcane is another hallmark of the festival, adorning homes and doubling as a treat. Have you ever tried biting into a sugarcane? It’s a delicious, messy, and surprisingly fun experience!
This year, I managed to get some sugarcane, and it made my Pongal extra special. There’s something deeply nostalgic about peeling and chewing on sugarcane, a simple pleasure that connects me to childhood memories and the spirit of the season. It’s a reminder of how celebrations, big or small, bring us back to what matters most.

A Festival of Gratitude
At its heart, Pongal is a celebration of gratitude—to nature, to the sun for its life-giving light, and to the animals that support agriculture. It’s a time to pause and reflect on the interconnectedness of life and how much we depend on these elements. The festival serves as a beautiful reminder to appreciate the abundance we often take for granted.
More Than a Tradition
While Pongal is deeply rooted in Tamil culture, its values of gratitude, community, and abundance transcend boundaries. It’s a celebration that encourages us all to slow down, reflect on what we’re thankful for, and share our joy with others. Whether it’s through cooking a meal together, decorating a space, or simply spending time with loved ones, the spirit of Pongal reminds us to cherish the moments that make life meaningful.
Let Your Life Overflow with Joy
As this festive week draws to a close, I’d like to leave you with a simple wish: May your life overflow with joy, just like the clay pots of sweet Pongal bubbling over in celebration. Whether you celebrated this week or not, take a moment to pause and reflect on what fills your life with abundance and gratitude.
Pongalo Pongal! Here’s to a season of prosperity, happiness, and togetherness for all of us.
