POLYACRYLAMIDE

Polyacrylamide is a synthetic polymer, meaning its a large molecule made up of many repeating units of a smaller molecule (in this case, acrylamide).

Meaning:

• Polymer: A long chain of repeating molecular units.
• Acrylamide: The monomer (single unit) that forms the backbone of polyacrylamide.

Uses of Polyacrylamide:

Water Treatment:

• Flocculation: Used to help particles in water clump together (flocculate) so they can be more easily removed during water treatment processes.
• Sedimentation: Aids in the settling of suspended solids in water.
• Clarification: Improves the clarity of water by removing impurities.

Soil Stabilization:

• Erosion Control: Used to stabilize soil and prevent erosion in construction sites and other areas.
• Dust Control: Helps to suppress dust on roads and other surfaces.

Paper Manufacturing:

• Strengthener: Improves the strength and drainage properties of paper.

Other Applications: Oil Recovery: Used in enhanced oil recovery processes.

• Agriculture: Used as a soil conditioner in some cases.
• Biotechnology: Used in various laboratory applications, such as gel electrophoresis.
