Pollinator Friendly Planting Scheme

Last week I visited a scheme planted in February. The client had lost a large tree revealing a new sunny border. The previous underplanting wasn’t adjusting well to the new conditions. They wanted a pollinator friendly planting design to work with their existing layout and thriving wildlife pond.
We agreed to reposition their stunning sculpture to the end of the garden to replace the height they had lost with the tree. The clients were very creative and had a wonderfully bold style and a handful of existing plants to work with such as Fatsia japonica and Ophiopogon.
I drew up a yellow/ orange planting plan to compliment the orange custom made shed. The new shade lovely planting around the deck includes Dryopteris erythrosora, Geranium phaeum ‘Somobor’, astrantias and hellebores. With log piles and concealed hedgehog box.
The key plants within this scheme include; Geum 'Totally Tangerine' (pics 1&2), Foeniculum vulgare, achillea terracotta, primula vulgare & Primula bulleyana, Asclepsias tuberosa, Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm' and cephalaria gigantea.
There’s some tweaking to do and plenty of filling out to do yet. The cephalaria, and anamanthele are only just starting. We’re now adding bulbs for spring and summer 24!
