Hi I am Jamie a television news veteran. For years I booked or pitched guests for hours of programming on CNN. Many times we could NOT find the right political voices, ones with relevant backgrounds and unique opinions. This challenge fuels my WHY!

Presidential Debate

If you are a political expert, with or without a background leading presidential campaigns, you should be on social media this week!

Here is the strategy and the number one tip I recommend!

As the Expert:

• Tweet! Use X to weigh-in on other political experts thoughts. Use this tool before, during, and after the debate.
• Weigh-in on comments other experts make or share their comments with your opinion.
• Consider tagging TV Producers to your comments. I also appreciated experts who pitch themselves too.
• IF you see an article or a guest on television, snap a photo or video and share your take with the clip or image!

As the Producer/Journalist:

• Sharing your opinion on social gives producers a sense of what you might say on television. Your comments could be “why” they book you to begin with!
• Being open about your thoughts in video format is a great way to prove you have the chops to say your comments on camera, so if you are new it helps producers sell you to the team as a possible guest.
• Your comments on X might wind up in an article! Even without pitching your thoughts might become featured in articles or in introductions on television explaining how Republicans or Democrats feel about a specific topic. I have a broader strategy - reach out!

(ON CAM) Ready Tip of the Day

If I were in charge of television guests I would create a role for a guest stylist! I was watching Scripps this morning and goodness me there was a guest who appeared to be live from a basement! There were boxes on cabinets and the lighting was horrible. The guest appeared orange.

Then I was watching Fox News Channel and there was a guest who’s hair looked wet from the shower and was sitting in front of a gun safe that had medical supplies on top of it. She too had terrible lighting.

THE POINT:

If you want to appear on television you should buy a mic and proper light! If you travel a bit, make sure this light is portable. Have it along with a tripod ready.

If you do not have proper lighting PLEASE face a window vs. sitting with your back to one!
