Polish startup Cardiomatics speeds up ECG Tests Analysis by 80% using state-of-the-art AI and AWS cloud

Analysing ECG tests in the traditional way can be time-consuming and complicated. On the one hand, we have exhausted doctors who, despite staff shortages, have to manually analyse a large number of results, and on the other hand – the patients, who have to wait a long, for reports on their examination and diagnosis. In response to this impasse, Polish start-up Cardiomatics was created. It has automated the process of analysing ECG signals by employing the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.??The platform is already being used by medical facilities around the world, including PZU Zdrowie medical centers in Poland.

Cardiomatics is a certified online platform, created by experts with experience in developing artificial intelligence and machine learning. Based on algorithms trained on billions of patients' actual heartbeats, the easy-to-use software enables accurate and fast detection and analysis of many components of the ECG signal.?

Used worldwide

Cardiomatics is used by, among others, the University of Basel, the University of Copenhagen, and the Medical University of Warsaw, as well as hundreds of cardiologists and practitioners from over 15 countries around the world, including Germany, Switzerland and Britain. Among the Polish institutions is PZU Zdrowie, which – as a nationwide medical operator with a network of 130 health centres – is pursuing solutions that improve the effectiveness of managing its medical personnel’s workload, the treatment process, and the patient’s journey. Recently, the Cardiomatics solution has been implemented in PZU Zdrowie medical centres in Warsaw.?

“In the process of implementing innovations, the doctors' open mindset towards adopting them to their work routine is crucial. We deny the myth that artificial intelligence is a competition for the medical staff.?In our opinion?its ultimate purpose is not to replace them, but to augment medical experts’ skills. To a large extent, effectiveness depends not on technological, but on human factors – to what extent we can convince the physician of the underlying benefits of the solution. Therefore, it must be as simple and intuitive as possible in order to avoid generating an additional burden within the already long list of activities and procedures that medical expert carries out,”?says Andrzej Browarski, Head of Analytics and Innovation Office, PZU Zdrowie. "One of our principles that are our guidance is?that the solutions we pilot are there to help our doctors help our patients. Cardiomatics is one such solution.”

Over 25 billion heartbeats as a benchmark

Cardiomatics provides an intuitive interface and easy-to-read ECG reports. It can analyse ECG signals recorded in various data formats, it is compatible with more than 25 popular devices, both legacy and modern ones. The reports it generates are available anywhere, any time: on a desktop, laptop, or smartphone.?

“Thanks to Cardiomatics, the doctor can connect the diagnostic device to any computer and send ECG signals to the cloud,”?says Rafa? Samborski, CEO and co-founder of Cardiomatics. “There, the signals are analysed by artificial intelligence algorithms. This reduces the analysis time by up to 80 percent compared to the standard procedure. In this way, with just a few clicks, a??reliable, transparent report is produced, on the basis of which the doctor can draw conclusions about the patient's current condition, diagnosis and possible treatment plan.”

Artificial intelligence will not replace physicians

As the first step, Cardiomatics proposes the so-called?head to head test. The software detects more than 20 heart rhythm abnormalities, including some that might not be detected???????by standard methods.?

“Organisations from the healthcare and life sciences sector, such as PZU Zdrowie, are reinventing the way they cooperate, make data-driven clinical and operational decisions, enable the use of precision medicine and reduce the cost of care. In order to help healthcare and life sciences organizations achieve their business and technical goals, companies like Cardiomatics can rely on AWS's secure cloud and our offer of services and solutions used by thousands of customers around the world. Together with our clients and partners, we can innovate in many areas of healthcare,”?says Tomasz Olejnik, General Manager, Public Sector Central Eastern Europe at AWS.
