Policing and Mental Health 2017

Policing and Mental Health 2017

Historically, the response to mental health issues by the police has been to adopt a reactive approach and attempt to learn lessons from inquiries when things have not perhaps been dealt with in the most appropriate manner.

This is no longer the case, and ‘policing and mental health’ is now a priority area for the service that can only be delivered through collaborative working with our partners. Whilst there are some successful partnerships and excellent cooperation in many areas, to date, this has failed to translate into consistency of service across all areas.

There is a need to adopt a problem-oriented approach to policing and mental health, predicated on a sophisticated understanding of demand and which acknowledges complexity as we see in other areas of the profession.

To coincide with Mental Health Awareness week, I am delighted to announce that registration is now open for this year’s National Policing and Mental Health Conference.

Following on from the success of last year’s inaugural conference, which was oversubscribed, the conference will be held at the newly refurbished Jurys Inn Hotel, Oxford on Tuesday 5th September.

This conference will be part of building a new national strategy for the police service on mental health: more focussed on prevention. Early intervention and problem-solving in conjunction not only with our partners but with those who live with mental health conditions of all kinds and their families.

To secure your place at the conference please click Policing and Mental Health Conference or contact CJS Event Solutions on 0333 222 4061.

Thanks Danny. As you know last years was the first one and the NPCC and College are looking to make it even more multi agency this year.
