Polarise to Mesmerise

Have you ever encountered someone who left an indelible mark on you with just a simple interaction? This past weekend, I met Susan, an 81-year-old artist whose philosophy on art and life did just that and reminded me of one of my core business philosophies.
A breakfast connection
While waiting for a friend to join me for breakfast at a café, I noticed Susan's undeniable presence at the next table. We struck up a conversation, and after a while, she shared her artwork with us, prefacing it with a statement that really struck a chord:
"You'll either love it or hate it. Either way is absolutely fine."
Polarise to Mesmerise
This is my “Polarise to mesmerise” philosophy in action!
Susan wasn’t just showing us her art; she was boldly sharing a piece of herself with clear understanding and full acceptance that not everyone would be a fan.
This encounter reminded me of how important this principle is for us as business owners, consultants, and entrepreneurs. Marketing and delivering your work is about more than just standing out in your industry. It’s about being true to your vision and voice, and meeting the needs of those who resonate most strongly with what you have to offer because you designed it for them.
Marketing and sales have never been about convincing and converting people. They've always been about connecting and communicating with confidence and certainty so the right people recognise the fit.
Why Polarising is Powerful
It makes sense, doesn’t it? Here’s just a few reasons why…?
The shift from customers to clients
My "Meet you where you are at, to hell with one size fits all formulas" Thinking Partner approach to business strategy has helped create client relationships that often span years.
In just one example, tomorrow a client is returning for her fifth strategic planning day. She recently got back in touch to say “I’ve quite a few ideas that have been brewing for the next growth phase for the business and it’s time to talk them through with you”. ?My brain is already primed for our day because I know her and I know her business history and she values this.
As a service provider, I want you to have long-term relationships with clients rather than short-term transactions with customers so your business is sustainable. They need to understand and appreciate how you meet their needs in your distinct, polarising way to truly connect with you in this way.
This week’s invitation
#BeLikeSusan You’re not here for everyone and that’s absolutely as it should be!
Be bold this week – contact a prospect and, once you understand what they need, boldly present your polarising approach.
Share a big idea in a social post.
Shoot a quick Loom video and send it to your list.
Polarising is not about alienating, invoking shock value or being obtuse; it's about differentiation. It’s about your fresh thinking and the value you create. It’s about giving yourself the chance to mesmerise your ideal clients.
And if you’re not sure how to polarise, and would like a strategic thinking partner to help uncover and articulate what makes you ideal for your clients, reach out.
I’d love to help.
Warmly,
Angela

The business owners I work with invariably have a great track record of success and no shortage of ideas for their next chapter, but they're not quite sure where to focus first, or where to best invest their time, energy and attention to create growth.
