The expedition, aboard the ship Antarctic, embarked on a journey to explore uncharted territories, focusing on geological, topographical, meteorological, and biological studies. Despite facing harsh conditions and the Antarctic being trapped and eventually crushed by pack ice, leading to a dramatic survival story for its crew, the expedition managed to collect a wealth of scientific data and specimens. Nordenskj?ld and his team overwintered on Snow Hill Island, enduring extreme conditions, while Larsen and some crew members experienced a separate ordeal. Teodor visited the memorial dedicated to Ernest Shackleton on Elephant Island.
This island gained its fame primarily as the bleak sanctuary for the British explorer Ernest Shackleton and his crew in 1916. After their ship, the Endurance, was trapped and eventually crushed by the ice of the Weddell Sea, the 28 weary survivors made their way to Cape Valentine on Elephant Island. Their journey to this point was marked by a grueling struggle for survival on drifting ice floes.

Carl Anton Larsen's Diaries
"Carl Anton Larsen's Diaries: From the Jason and Antarctic Expeditions to Antarctica" presents a firsthand account of the pioneering journeys undertaken by the Norwegian explorer and whaler, Carl Anton Larsen, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through his detailed diaries, Larsen provides an intimate glimpse into the life of Antarctic explorers, documenting his experiences from the Jason expedition, which aimed to investigate the commercial viability of Antarctic waters, to his subsequent leadership role in the Swedish Antarctic Expedition. His writings cover the challenges of navigating through ice-packed seas, the scientific observations made, the establishment of the first permanent whaling station in Antarctica at Grytviken, South Georgia, and the broader implications of human activities in the Antarctic region.
