Poland Makes Renewables a Reality with First Offshore Windfarms

Wednesday, 11 October 2023

Poland will have their first operational offshore windfarms, by connecting the Baltyk II and Baltyk III to their shore.??

This is an important marker of progress for Europe’s transition to renewable energy.??

Jan De Nul Group and Hellenic Cables, in a collaborative effort, have won the contract to install four HVAC export cables in the Polish Baltic Sea.??

Baltyk II and Baltyk III will each have a capacity of 720 MW and connect to the onshore grid via a total of four HVAC submarine cables with a combined length of 256 kilometres.?

They will be the first operational offshore wind farms in Poland, supporting the nation in its transition to renewable energy.??

The project is scheduled to commence in 2026, with the design and manufacturing of the cables to take place in Corinth, Greece at Hellenic Cables’ plant. Jan De Nul will then be responsible for transporting, installing and burying the cables.??

”Hellenic Cables is proud to renew our collaboration with Jan De Nul and together to support Equinor and Polenergia in meeting their export cable needs for Baltyk II & III offshore wind projects. We look forward to executing the project safely and supporting the energy transition in Europe and Poland” said Alexis Alexiou, CEO of Cenergy Holdings.??

The development is significant in many ways. It shows progress towards an energy resilient future for Europe. It could also inspire neighbouring countries to accelerate their own renewable energy ventures.??

In a broader sense, when European nations move forward with executing these projects, it creates a playing field for increased innovation, investment and focus on developing infrastructure needed to transition to a green energy grid.??
