Poka-yoke, a Japanese concept meaning "mistake-proofing" or "error prevention," is a key principle in lean manufacturing that helps businesses minimize errors and enhance quality. Introduced by Shigeo Shingo within the Toyota Production System, poka-yoke is widely applicable across industries, from manufacturing to services, to prevent defects and improve efficiency.
Achieving Excellence with Poka-Yoke in Business
Prevention: Eliminates the possibility of errors before they happen (e.g., USB ports designed to fit only one way).
Detection: Identifies errors instantly, allowing for immediate correction (e.g., sensors used in manufacturing).

As you can see in the image above, the other day, I visited a sweet shop and noticed a bright pink dice glued to the F10 key on the billing keyboard. Curious, I asked the cashier about it. He explained that F10 is the most frequently used key for billing, and since cashiers change often, this simple “jugaad” helps everyone stay on the same page.
This small yet effective idea ensures smooth operations, reflecting Lean thinking in an unexpected setting. A tiny change can make a big difference!
