A point of view provides clarity of vision

Welcome to the latest issue of the Wonder@Work newsletter.

Do you ever find yourself wondering why some podcasts captivate you or why certain books stick with you long after you’ve finished reading them? It’s not just the content; it’s also especially the point of view. I ask friends and clients this question frequently because it’s the core of captivating, genuine communication.

Your point of view is a communication lens that can help strengthen your branding, positioning, and engagement with potential stakeholders, customers, and partners.

The Power of a Clear Point of View

Most of us crave more than just information. Many of us hunger for a point of view that speaks to our values and beliefs or at least provides a fresh way of seeing an old subject that could lead to new action.

According to some research, 64% of consumers worldwide are belief-driven buyers. They seek brands and messages that speak to their values and convictions.

A compelling point of view, then, doesn’t just present information—it invites you into a conversation. It engages you, makes you think, and often it transforms your perspective. Think about the podcasts you love or the books that left a mark on you. There’s an elegance or provocation in their point of view that draws you in and keeps you engaged.

When you bring openness, curiosity, and wonder to your own point of view, you not only enrich your own process of business growth but also add value to the people who benefit from your work. A well-developed point of view provides profound clarity, both to yourself and to those you serve.

What is a Point of View?

In the world of business, branding, and projects, a point of view is the unique perspective or message that resonates with or even provokes the people your brand elevates.

It’s not just about having an opinion; it’s about creating a viewpoint that captivates, builds loyalty, and enhances your field or culture.

A strong point of view does four key things:

  1. Establishes Warmth and Resonance: It connects deeply with people, making them feel understood and valued.
  2. Elevates Your Brand or Business: It differentiates you from the competition, highlighting what makes you unique.
  3. Builds Loyalty: It fosters a sense of belonging and alignment among your audience or customers.
  4. Transforms Your Field or Culture: It contributes to broader conversations and shifts perspectives in meaningful ways.

The Journey to an Elegant Point of View

Crafting a point of view isn’t about spouting off a flippant opinion. It requires significant behind-the-scenes work—reflection, experience, and testing. An authentic point of view often reflects long-standing values and virtues, and sometimes, we need an outside perspective to see our own point of view clearly.

In fact, shaping and unfolding a point of view with a client or leadership team is a key activity I savor. I coach clients through a discovery interview to tease out their point of view. Then we contextualize the point of view within a dynamic brand story.

Starting with Your Point of View

You can apply openness and curiosity to develop your point of view for various aspects of your business, book, or endeavor. Here are some steps to get started:

  1. Identify the Main Theme or Core Influence Area (CIA): What topic area do you or your business have authority in that you want to be more known for in the next two or more years? Divorce law? Workplace culture? Diversity, equity. and inclusion at work? Working with special needs children? Productivity? AI?
  2. Address Misconceptions: What common misconceptions or incomplete views exist about this topic? Try to identify 1-3 such misconceptions in relatively simple sentences.
  3. Craft an Affirmative Message or Position: What compelling or provocative message could you stand behind?

Try to distill your point of view into one clear yet captivating sentence. Test it out and refine it as you gather input.

Final Thoughts

A clear and elegant point of view can serve as a powerful filter for your actions and decisions. It will help you focus on what truly matters and guide you in making choices that align with your core values.
