Point of care testing for pharmacies

Point of care testing for pharmacies

The term point-of-care (POC) testing is used to describe the early detection of diseases and other conditions in a healthcare facility. The aim is to identify the presence of a disease at an early stage so that treatment can be initiated before symptoms appear. Healthcare facilities use POC testing for many reasons:

Section functional medicine:

Functional Medicine (FM) is a new approach to healthcare that helps patients overcome chronic diseases. FM is a personalized approach, which aims to find the root cause of the disease and treat it.

Functional medicine practitioners are trained in both Western scientific methods and alternative therapies, such as herbal medicine, acupuncture or meditation. They use these tools to create treatment plans for patients based on their genetic makeup and environmental factors such as diet or lifestyle choices.

Section Antioxidant scan:

Antioxidants may be good for the skin and heart, but do they protect against cancer? Can antioxidants help prevent macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness in the elderly? In this section we will look at the latest research on antioxidant supplements and their effects on health.

In this section we review:

Antioxidant scanners: these devices measure free radicals in the blood. They can tell you if you have too many free radicals (oxidation) or too few (oxidative stress).

Antioxidant supplements: pills that contain antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E. These pills may reduce oxidative stress in people at risk for certain diseases, such as heart disease or cancer.

Section Medical device:

A medical device is a product used for the diagnosis or treatment of a disease or other health problem. Medical devices can be divided into two categories: in vitro diagnostic devices, which detect and measure the structure or function of cells or tissues; and therapeutic devices, which treat diseases. These categories are further divided according to whether they are invasive (i.e., they penetrate the body) or non-invasive.

In pharmaceutical practice, examples of medical devices include blood pressure monitors, ophthalmoscopes (used to examine the eyes), otoscopes (used to examine the ears) and pulse oximeters (which measure oxygen saturation).

Section Antioxidant

Antioxidants are a group of compounds that can prevent oxidative damage. Oxidative damage is caused by unstable molecules, called free radicals, which try to steal electrons from other molecules to stabilize themselves. Over time, this can lead to damage and cell death. Antioxidants help eliminate these free radicals by providing them with one or two electrons without being harmful to the body itself.

Antioxidants include vitamins A, C and E (often found in supplements), as well as beta-carotene (a precursor to vitamin A). Antioxidant compounds are also found in many fruits and vegetables, especially blueberries.

Point of care testing is great service to add....I just don't know if it is a practical service to add in the current business model of chain drug stores. Most of us don't want another metric added to the slew of other metrics.

This is great information! Thanks Dr. Mansi Shah. If we start to notice the subtle early signs our bodies are giving us, we might be able to reduce or even get rid of chronic diseases. Before a doctor can make a diagnosis, the body sends us so many signs, even in the mouth. We just have to listen to our bodies and learn what they are trying to tell us.
