Those who know me, know that I have dedicated my life to addressing
the literacy crisis in our country and what it means to be a lifelong learner.
One of the key sections in my book, Literacy Mats, is titled, "The Eight Traits
of Conversation." I am one of the few educators in the United States whose work has focused on making explicit and intentional the growth a learner's science and art of conversation skills to improve their academic, social, and emotional growth.
Read and think about my poem and let me know what you think?
Let's start a viral conversation!!
Conversation with Passion
Being polite and respectful,
one trait of conversation's art,
completely prepared and engaged,
with passion we are ready to start.
To be an active listener,
in a sincere, authentic way,
being clear, seeking clarity,
asking questions at our cafe.
To gain a deep understanding,
we think, inquire, and probe to know,
monitoring comprehension,
the inner voice begins to grow.
Controlling impulsiveness too,
engaging this way is mature.
Our spiritual rudder guides us,
integrity makes the talk pure.
As a lifelong learner, socially, and professionally, grow the art and science of being a conversatinalist!

8 年I feel like as a society we have better conversation skills than ever - it's considerateness that's an endangered species. A good conversation is grounded in mutual respect and all too frequently we are self absorbed and just want to talk about ourselves and our pet issues and conversation just devolves into two people alternating between daydreaming and talking to someone else who is daydreaming until the socially expected amount of time has passed :(

8 年I see that it is presented in a column of lines, but it just doesn't seem like poetry. Still, I agree 100% with the message!
