A POEM FOR AXELU
Ferdinand N Cortez

SHE MAY GET AWAY FROM MY SIDE, BUT SHE WILL NEVER LEAVE MY HEART
Down the labyrinthine path
She travels far and wide
While my mind seeks meaning
Meandering, seeking
Soon, she’ll awake and see
Why hearts are drawn to last
Leaving the world of fantasy
Like a wind, it sails so fast
She’ll learn that days are hot, nights are cold
She’ll learn the labors of the old
The heart with care is strong by a need
And is strengthened by trials’ gentle knead
She’ll turn hopes into destiny
Caressed by the breeze she will be strong
Fortified by pain and augury
She’ll be my twilight’s favorite song
As day after day, the fates unfold,
she paddles her canoe
Bravely she sails enduring the cold
To learn, unlearn: to know
She’ll find, find her destiny
And wishes upon a star
Hope inflames the sky at night
Whenever the stars shine their light
