PODTalks April Virtual Event (Deb's notes)

PODTalks April Virtual Event (Deb's notes)

Today I attended PodMatch April Virtual Event called PODTalks. I've been a member of the PodPros community for a while and had the privilege of meeting Alex Sanfilippo in Orlando last year.

What I love is when podcasters get together and share their tips, but now that I've decided not to be a podcaster, I haven't been active in the community until now because as I prepare for my book launch (fall), I want to do a "book tour" with podcasts as a guest.

The podcast industry has changed quite a bit since I started podcasting back in 2020, and now the competition for guesting is fierce. That's why I went right to where the experts are and took notes on the best tips for getting onto and having success as a podcast guest.

If you are thinking about being a guest on a podcast, you'll want to check out PodMatch, which offers a way for you to connect to podcasters and create a profile. (I still need to update mine.)

  • Alex talked with podcasters and podcast guests, and both camps of people are saying the same thing - podcasts aren't providing what they expected.
  • Many podcasters are burned out by the amount of work it takes to the podcast, and due to Ai tools, so many podcasters get generic pitches, which makes it hard to find great guests. This is why PodMatch works so well.
  • It is more beneficial to get onto new podcasts because the first few episodes of a podcast are the most listened to by an audience.

3 Tips for Successful Podcasters?

  • BE PART OF A COMMUNITY OF PEERS? - Actively staying involved with other podcasters - Community is so important, and that is where accountability is so powerful - find people to collaborate with, and to help you by making introductions, sharing a vision, if you aren’t participating in an online community as a podcaster - YOU ARE MISSING OUT!??

  • PRACTICE SELF-CARE DAILY ?(Hobby Mindset / Business Strategy) - Maintaining a balance between life and your podcast. It’s so important and makes so much sense because people get burned out so quickly. It’s overwhelming and can be exhausting, especially if you are doing it all by yourself in the beginning. Podcasting isn’t life or death. It is more important to approach a podcast when you are able to approach it from a “Culture of Calm.” Alex states that he makes sure to set boundaries around the podcasting tasks, goals, and challenges. You set the stage, and it’s up to you how to keep it running like a business.?

  • SELF DISCIPLINE - BE COMMITTED - (Set intrinsic instead of extrinsic goals)? 74 of the top 100 podcasts Alex polled said that they were committed and persistent and dedicated to releasing episodes and getting onto podcasts consistently if you are a guest. Be “married” to the “process” and not the “result” or “outcome.” You’ll become more consistent over time; practice until it becomes a habit. Do for 1 what you want to do for “all” - know that you are making a difference and we are created to create - use your craft - hone in on it, and at some point, the results will follow.?

How to Make Podcast Hosts Absolutely LOVE You with Daniel Alfon

Notable quote: "Listen with a purpose."

Identify the question, then provide the answer?

  • Quote from a past episode through a context so that it feels natural?
  • Communicate in a good way?
  • Sometimes words have 2 meanings, so be clear on your message?
  • Relate the quote to customize it to fit what you can add?

Steps to quoting podcasts and guesting?

  1. Listen with a mission (to understand the purpose, vision, and needs of the podcast listeners of that podcast)?
  2. Integrate quotes with your personal journey or experiences (natural answers)?
  3. Customize your messaging for this podcast episode?
  4. Implement by design through a great conversation?

Will this quote move the conversation forward?

Yes or No??

After the interview?

  • Send a thank you email a few days after the interview - Thank you for the opportunity to be interviewed on your show.?
  • Connect on social media - Ask them where they are most active. Connect with them there, comment, listen to their videos, watch their stories, and some people don’t even open their email. Find another way to reach out and say thanks.?
  • Share the show with your audience - Once an episode is live, then share it on social media, and promote it by going LIVE on Facebook or IG; for example, is a big way to give back to a podcast host and help get views and downloads.?
  • Having a follow-up after the podcast has aired. Leave them a review on Apple Podcasts, really every single time, and even before you are a guest on their show.?
  • Keep a spreadsheet of your connections and keep track of whom you’ve talked with and when was the last time you spoke with them; keep connected and reach out after a while to take that relationship to the next level.?
  • Promote the show LIVE if you don't want to post too much on social media, and this can be used later for reels and podcast promo video series.?
  • Ask the host about connections and have a media kit, and you could have a “playlist” with the ability to share podcasts you’ve already been a host on.?

3 Ways to Impress as a Podcast Guest with Dan Cumberland

The host functions as a “stand-in” for the audience members - when the host isn’t connecting, the audience isn’t either.

The best way to accomplish your goal?

  1. Understand the host goals - What is the host trying to do? The key to crushing it as a guest is to serve their mission with your episode, help listeners, help advertisers, or help hosts. Understand what success looks like and work to achieve their success, make something special for their episode.?
  2. Frame YOUR story through THEIR lens - A good interview is like improv, back and forth - Yes…and. Accept and build - take the insight from the host, add your life experiences, insights, challenges, or what you’ve overcome, then toss it back to the host.?
  3. Complement the Host -Help them make them look good, give words of encouragement, kind thoughts, and ways you’ve benefited from their content or if you’ve worked with them.?

Steps to take

  1. As the host, what is their favorite episode is
  2. Ask the host what makes a great guest for their podcast?
  3. Ask how the host monetizes their show and how it fits into their business (what services they offer, how they go to market, then you can do the next step)?

Why Podcast Guests Need to Define Their Avatar with Dr. Vic Manzo

You want the 3 things to be in alignment will make it better for you to get your message to podcasts?

Who do I serve?

Does this podcast align with who I serve??

Does this audience align with who I serve??

Start with 1 thing - understand what I want to do?

Steps to take?

  1. Clarity with my purpose and vision.?
  2. Podcasts that fit me?
  3. Do they have a vision??
  4. Listen to their episodes (at least one) to see if they have guests if the message is aligned with your message, and what you will share.?
  5. Do they have other guests like you? That will help you realize if they have guests that are similar, which means you’ll be more likely to get approved as a guest.?
  6. Check out social media - do they share stories and reels, or do they post on LinkedIn, Instagram, or YouTube?
  7. Are they hanging out where you want to be??
  8. Are their listeners where your customers or clients are??
  9. Do their audiences align with your message or what you will be sharing?
  10. Can you relate to their audience??

3 Secrets to a Profitable Podcast Guest Call to Action with Kelly Mosser

3 Things that an effective CTA needs to have to bring results?

  1. Logical - The step in between what they just heard and the end result - what’s the next step for them? Checklists that help them? If you talked about social media, but CTA isn’t related to that, it isn’t logical. What is logical for them if they want more??
  2. Irresistible - Think about when people are driving and what will happen when the episode ends. What could I make that would make someone “pull over” to stop? What’s the most interesting thing that I could offer that would make someone stop and think about how to connect or book a call with you??
  3. Memorable - Listeners are doing other things, so offer them a “keyword” or a joke, or story, or something that they can remember - CTA - Message me the word “...” to get a super bonus from me… for example.?

What you say in the last 30 seconds of a podcast episode matters.?
