Are Podcasts Better Than Netflix?
Someone posted one of those lists. If you don't save it when you see it? Good luck finding it again. It was the usual "Less alcohol, more water" regarding replacing bad habits with something better.
When they said "Less Netflix, more podcasts" I took umbrage. Not subscribing to Netflix I managed to watch both seasons of Fleabag. You have to respect a show that begins with a booty call.
Those were some interesting characters that I may not want to meet in life. Having a weird stepson play the bassoon? That did not change his perception of weirdness. In the absence of an article on that series? I began watching the first season of The Crown.
Find me a podcast that is remotely as entertaining as that. No one ever asked if I want to appear on a podcast. Some have stated they would have me on as a mercy case. I don't beg to appear on podcasts. People don't return their phone calls. Why should I expect anyone to invite me on their podcast?
It's not like I shall have three thousand articles by Thanksgiving. Pity I chose the least impressive format where people might actually have to use their minds and read. Not that I shall start posting selfies that show off my curves. I need to flatten those curves.

You cannot go wrong with Peter Morgan writing about the monarchy. There is no podcast as fascinating as John Lithgow playing Winston Churchill. He has a long and consistent career.
There must be enriching podcasts. To me? They are too long. If you watch the Lord of the Rings movies? That takes a while. I did it once and don't feel the need to watch them again. Watching a ten hour continued story is more purposeful than watching ten minutes of the Real Housewives of Walla Walla, Washington.
Reality television is a waste of time. Are you going to watch Sex Island to see who will accidentally overdose? That show has a high death toll. Not as high as Glee although there were some tragic ends on that series. Jane Lynch might be the sole survivor of that program.
If I found value in podcasts I might listen. Even the ones hosted by people I love do not hold my interest. It feels like I am doing surveillance and eavesdropping on conversations. They are for someone else. Many people I know and respect host podcasts. They can keep doing their thing. I do not foresee a podcast of my own.
There were vague notions years ago. If I don't like podcasts it would be hypocritical to host one. Why spread the disease? It would be one more thing I do on this site that feels like progress is made and would be totally ignored.
I (hopefully) amuse and (occasionally) inspire independent thinkers on Zen Sammich - top 5% podcast globally | TEDx Speaker | Atty/Prof turned washi (Japanese paper) maker | Award-winning Contributor at BIZCATALYST 360
3 å¹´I read it too. Not just Jim Murray. Look, I am the host of a podcast and I agree with you (except for the part about podcasts being a "disease"). Podcasts are often way too long (which is why I call mine a "short-form" podcast - 15 min. solos and 30 min interviews). But my biggest gripe is this: far too many podcasters have shows about nothing. Only Seinfeld can pull that off. But many podcasters just sit around and bullsh*t with their buddy Kevin and think they are going to be the next Joe Rogan for some reason. They neglect the fact that Joe Rogan had a celebrity resume to start with and can get celebrity guests. I cast the net wide on my topics, but my show is always about SOMETHING. Every time. So, look, is my show as good as Netflix? No. Not even close. But, you know, maybe you'll be washing the dishes one day or you are in your car and you can't exactly watch Netflix. Well, there I am for you. Thanks for your article. I agree.
