PODCAST EPISODE FROM 2 AUTHORS WHO PASSIONATELY PRACTICE THE PHILOSOPHY OF STOICISM

In 2014, a friend gave me a book on ancient philosophy called Meditations by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. As I turned each page, I was initially skeptical and didn’t know what to make of all this philosophical discourse. But I stayed with it…until I felt a lightning bolt that changed how I view myself and the world around me. The book significantly impacted my psyche and inspired me to change careers and go to work each day in the service of others’ success.
Although Aurelius was a warrior and the world’s most powerful man, his book demonstrated the importance of Stoic Philosophy as a blueprint for his behavior and leadership style. It is the story of a remarkably kind, humble, and formidable individual who led by example. It also motivated me to write The MOMENT THAT DEFINES YOUR LIFE published last year. ?
I strive to model Marcus’ behavior and positive attitude despite life’s challenges and setbacks. Stoicism is a philosophy that maximizes positive emotions based on one core principle: “We cannot control the external events around us, but we can control our reactions to them.”? Understanding how to operate according to “The Dichotomy of Control” has been a labor of love and guides me daily to lead a thriving and fulfilling life.
Stoicism was created to be?useful and actionable. To practice it (yes, practicing like an athlete) there is no need to learn a new philosophical lexicon or meditate for hours per day.?Instead, it teaches us adaptability and how to remain calm under pressure and great expectations. When I was in college, I dismissed philosophy as useless. How wrong I was! If I could rewind the clock, my formal education would look vastly different.
Although many books have been written on the subject, Donald Robertson’s HOW TO THINK LIKE A ROMAN EMPEROR is my favorite. A cognitive psychotherapist, his remarkable book depicts Marcus's life, integrating insights from modern psychology and the enduring wisdom of Stoicism. Clever, creative, and practical, I recommend it to everyone committed to their personal and professional development.
He also hosts a podcast Stoicism: Philosophy as a Way of Life. Donald discusses how to apply it in the modern world, exploring philosophy, psychology, and self-improvement with guests from all walks of life.
Last week it was a pleasure to be his guest. We discussed what Stoicism means to me, why it matters to everyone, and what inspired me to write The MOMENT. Click the link below to listen to our engaging conversation. I am grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with one of my favorite authors and hope you find our episode valuable. ?
