PO ToolKit: Roles & Responsibilities

The role of a product owner (PO) can be quite challenging if you are new to the agile framework. There seems to be more material on agile approaches, and little about the product ownership role, despite it being one of the major positions in a scrum team which plays a pivotal position in the success of a product.

Most of the articles and information online cover Agile theories and concepts with little material about the detailed working experience or practices of individual members within the framework.

Although following these theories provides a solid foundation and insight into the role, it doesn’t address real-world scenarios or applications for product owners.

This was not accidental, as I believe it was done by design to ensure that the agile framework and methodologies continue to grow as businesses, process, people tools and technology develop.

I often receive questions from my friends who are transitioning to become a PO about the subject and so in this article and future posts, I will explore what you need to know about being a product owner.

Think of it as a no fluff toolkit for product owners.

Roles and responsibilities of a Scrum team?

I have created a Scrum RACI to paint a thousand words. This includes the artefacts and ceremonies that a scrum team will typically conduct. The light blue and pink shaded column represents the primary role of a PO.

RACI is an acronym for responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed. It represents the functions and level of engagement for each collaborator or participant on an agile team. The idea of a RACI is to reduce confusion around decision-making by visually highlighting each member’s roles and responsibilities.

Responsible = The individual/group who do the actual work.

Accountable = The individual/group is liable for the success of the task (i.e. decision-maker).

Consulted = The individual/group who provides their input of domain expertise in the task.

Informed = The individual/group who needs to be kept in the loop of tasks progress.
