?? ROUNDTABLE: Covering elections for youth audiences

Staff at PMA’s member organisations are invited to attend our next PSM Unpacked roundtable.

From Tuvalu to India, 2024 is a year of elections – more people will head to the polls this year than any other year previously, in nations of all sizes.

Elections are critical moments for public service media, when their responsibility to foster an informed and educated citizenry is put to the test. Historically, data shows that audiences turn to public service media during election periods. But to maintain this position and standing, public media need to reach?all?audiences, and ensure their content is being delivered and consumed by all.??

So, what does this mean for young audiences, who are likely to consume and engage with news and information in ways very different from older generations? How can public media deliver the same level of trusted content, but package it in new and innovative ways so that it reaches first time voters or the next generation of voters.

In this session, we will examine how public service media organisations can create content for young audiences at elections – moments of peak democratic participation. What type of content resonates with young audiences? What barriers are there to creating the right type of content? And what are the most essential channels through which to reach these audiences? ?

When? 0700 UTC, 26 June 2024

?? Podcast: How are public media covering elections?

In the latest episode of our podcast, Media Uncovered, we look at how public media are covering elections. We speak to GBC in Ghana, which is trying to reach as many remote communities as possible amid budget pressures, while creating mechanisms to maintain its accuracy; we’re in Brussels, looking at how various journalists and broadcasters are covering the European elections; and we ask PTS Taiwan if there’s any lessons from their experience in January.?

???? “Policymakers must take urgent action” to make VRT prominent

To listen to or watch the offer of a public broadcaster such as VRT, you must be able to find it. That sounds logical, but it is not so obvious. Media consumers are increasingly using digital platforms and apps. Local players such as VRT, but also Play or VTM are often difficult to find.
