PM POWER Moves: Breaking INTO Project Management – 021: AI BOOST

Welcome back to the PM POWER Moves newsletter! If you missed any of the other iterations, check my profile to read!

I've been actively engaged on LinkedIn since April of 2022. In that time, I've developed a niche of aspiring project managers looking to translate their existing experience (like I did) to gain new opportunities in the project management field. My desire for my content (and this newsletter) is to be able to help YOU do that!

I will be publishing this newsletter every other Sunday and covering a wide variety of content to leverage in your own experience and career to help provide you opportunity!

This week's topic: AI BOOST

ChatGPT and other AI tools have been all the rage in 2023.

And while AI can’t rewrite your resume or develop a relationship for your network for you (yet).

It can help you outline the blueprints for many different aspects of your job search.

Today I’m going to highlight 3 ways AI can give you a BOOST in your career pivot.

Tactic 1: Let AI help you ID projects you can do in your current role.

I asked ChatGPT to “suggest 20 generic projects someone could do in their current role as a non project manager.”

Here’s what it came up with:

Don’t like the list, ask for 20 more.

Tips:

  • Add in some key context about your specific role – ie: if you’re in customer success, ask it to suggest projects you could perform in the customer success industry to build relevant project management experience.
  • Like a couple of the suggestions??Ask ChatGPT to flesh them out further for you with key details for collecting business requirements and specific outcomes to put together in a presentation for your boss.
  • You can even ask it to write up a quick pitch to send to your boss!

Tactic 2: Let AI help you ID projects that you can implement from a role you’d like to have.

Have a job description from a company in mind for a PM role you’d love to have?

You probably won’t get that open role right now, but you can start building experience toward it.

Ask ChatGPT to “Suggest 10 projects an aspiring PM could implement in their current role based on the roles and responsibilities of this job description” and copy the job description below the ask.

Here’s what ChatGPT put together:

Like one of them?

Ask ChatGPT to flesh it out in more detail for you.

You can even ask ChatGPT for tips on how to implement it in your current role.

Follow the steps from Tactic 1 to outline it and bring it to your boss.

Tactic 3: Let AI write up interview questions for you to answer and practice, based on a job description.

I asked ChatGPT to “write 10 questions a hiring manager might ask based on the roles and responsibilities of this job description” and copied the job description below the ask.

Here’s what it gave me:

Tips:

  • You can then ask it to generate answers to each question for you to have a guide for outlining your own answers from you own experience.?

  • You can also ask it to generate questions for you to ask the hiring manager FROM the job description.

What are you waiting for?

You have this intuitive tool to help you do just about anything.?Go use it!

What I’ve presented is just the tip of the iceberg.

You can use AI for almost all aspects of your career pivot and job search.

Some quick examples I just thought of:

  • Use AI to generate DMs for networking.
  • Use AI to help you put together a project portfolio.
  • Use AI to help you rewrite your resume.
  • Use AI to help you outline a project/change/risk/stakeholder/communications management plan.
  • Use AI to help you ask better questions (in your role as a PM, for an interview, etc.).

The application is limitless.

Let AI do the legwork for you.

Disclaimer: DON’T use AI to lie about your qualifications or experience.

Use it as a tool to help you outline your thoughts and come up with ideas and then tailor them specifically using your own experience, outcomes, and metrics.

Thank you for reading! As always, I hope these newsletters resonate!

I'd love to hear your feedback as well as any suggestions for future topics that you'd like me to cover.
