A Special Edition
Usually, this newsletter comes out on Tuesdays, but I'm going a few days early this round because my book, "The Unready Project Manager," has finally been released! Please buy your copy in ebook, hardcover, or paperback now through this link:
I will send you a free signed/inscribed bookplate to include in your copy for those who would like a signature. Simply email me at jconnolly@salientian.com to arrange it and I'll send it to you.
This is my first book, and it's easily my most time-intensive contribution to people considering a career pivot into project management. It's a "quick and dirty" guide to getting a project up and running and includes advice on developing a career in project management, plus a glossary of project management terms, translated into straightforward language. A few resources for continued reading are included, too.
Throughout the process of writing, editing, and publishing the book, I've had a ton of support from my network. I'm so happy to have your support; please purchase your copy now!
Demonstrating Your Value
I'm a big believer in stockpiling value during your employed times so you can draw on it between jobs. Ideally, this will make your search a whole lot easier, provided you cultivate outlets to demonstrate your value.
This concept has been top-of-mind for me recently as I concluded the writing and publishing phases of the release for "The Unready Project Manager." There are several purposes behind writing the book. At its heart, I wanted to help along new project managers who are unfamiliar with good practices to set themselves up for success. But it's also an exercise in demonstrating value.

Giving value to others is a great way to build a strong network and to stand out when recruiters are checking out your social media posts (yes, this happens more than you'd think). If you have a strong network that realizes your value, you're much more likely to get suggestions and referrals when it's your turn to find a new job.
Many people are intimidated by the idea of giving value to others. They're very willing to help others, but don't feel confident in their own value. I think this is a challenge to be overcome, and that you will be well-served if you can find a way to share your experience and insight with others. Sometimes that's a quiet DM or a few comments on other posts. For others, larger projects like a book, article, or live event are ways of demonstrating value. In-person networking can be powerful, too. I always suggest to new project managers that they join PMI and explore opportunities for mentorship and learning.
The important thing to know is that you can't wait until you're already in need of your network. It is extremely difficult to focus on a job search and building up your value at the same time. As the old saying goes, we need to "make hay while the sun shines." It's an investment in yourself that will pay dividends in the long run.
