PM GatiShakti: A Holistic Approach to Tackle India's Infrastructural Challenges

Launched in August 2021, GatiShaki is one of the flagship programs led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a holistic approach to tackle infrastructural challenges of the country. On the 75th Independence day, PM Modi announced the GatiShakit Scheme, which will be backed by a Rs 100 lakh crore budget to fuel the infrastructural projects running in India.?

This great initiative is implemented to achieve India's goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy and generating considerable employment opportunities for the Indian population. Under mission GatiShakti, several initiatives focused on Indian citizens, industries, and villages will be implemented to solve India's multi-model connectivity problem and ensure efficient connectivity for last-mile areas.?

Keep reading this post to learn more about the Union Government's flagship program, "GatiShakti."

What is PM Gati Shakti?

PM GatiShakti is a strategic and flagship program of the union government that connected 16 ministries, including Roads and Highways, Petroleum and Gas, Power, Telecom, and Railway, to develop a holistic infrastructure development framework and also ensure proper execution of same.?

The successful execution of the GatiShakti roadmap will develop multi-modal connectivity linking rural areas with necessary infrastructural requirements and connecting them with more than 1200 industrial clusters.?

The objective of Mission GatiShakti

To promote the Made in India campaign, with the objective of manufacturing products in India to make them more competitive and ready for the world market, efficient implementation of PM Gati Shakti can lead to better performance.

Currently, India's supply chain cost stays at about 12% of GDP, which is much higher than the global supply chain cost, an average of 8%.?

Some of the factors responsible for high logistic costs are ineffective road connectivity across the country and inefficient utilization of air, rail, and waterways. So, when the final product is manufactured in India, it costs more compared to other countries.

PM GatiShakti's program has kept following objectives to make Indian products more competitive:

  1. Development of national highways to touch 2 lakh km benchmark
  2. The cargo capacity of railways is to be increased by 1,600 tonnes by FY25.
  3. Boost infrastructure in the Aviation section by developing 200 new airports, helipads, and water aerodromes.
  4. Renewable energy capacity will be increased to 225GW by the end of FY25.
  5. Connect India's rural areas with a 4G internet connectivity system
  6. Develop 20 new mega food parks and 202 fishing clusters
  7. It is also proposed to develop 11 industrial corridors and two new defense corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamilnadu.?

How Does PM GatiShakti Function?

To facilitate large-scale and strategic infrastructural development, GatiShakti forms proper coordination among 16 central ministries, including Railways, Roads and Highways, Petroleum and Gas, Shipping, Telecom, and Aviation, to plan and operate centralized transportation and logistic grids for smoother, sustainable, and straightforward clearance of projects.?

Furthermore, GatiShati plays a crucial role in large-scale infrastructure projects like Bharatmala, UDAAN, expansion of rail and road networks. Since central ministries are coordinating under the GatiShati program and ensuring the straightforward execution of infrastructure, there is also expected to be a significant rise in employment opportunities.?

Key Components of Mission GatiShakti

1. Multi-Modal Infrastructure Development: This union government's flagship program aims to set up an efficient and effective multi-modal transportation infrastructure (that includes road, rail network, waterways, airways, and even pipelines) to enable the seamless movement of goods and services across the nation, resulting significant reduction in logistic costs and improvement in supply chain efficiencies.?

2. Technology Enabled Logistic: Under the Gati Shakti mission, the government will incorporate the indigenously developed, world-class technology, Kavach, to cover 2,000 km of networks. It focused on developing and employing 400 new-generation Vande Bharat trains and 100 cargo terminals in the following years. This master plan also aims to include spatial planning tools, Geo-Satellite Imagery, and many cutting-edge technologies to ensure the timely completion and efficient operation of these projects.

3. Green Transportation Solutions: Along with large-scale infrastructure projects, the scheme aims to promote green and sustainable transportation solutions to preserve ecological systems and develop needed infrastructure in the given time frame. Many national-level programs like Parvatmala employ the PPP model to develop roads in hilly and challenging areas using sustainable alternatives.?

4. Effective Rural Connectivity: Mission GatiShakti includes effective and straightforward connectivity among rural and urban areas. Under this program, the rural roads are to be developed and connected with urban areas of the country. Moreover, it is proposed to promote rural entrepreneurship and education to generate employment opportunities. Providing internet and electricity connectivity to rural areas is also being done under the GatiShakti program.?

How Does the Gati Shakti Program Help in the Development of India?

The PM Gatishakti program can positively impact the Indian economy. By developing a multi-modal infrastructure network, the government aims to reduce the logistic cost and strengthen supply chain efficiency to make Indian products more economical and suitable for the global market.?

The railway is also developing some cost-effective solutions to aid small farmers and businesses in ensuring the easy movement of their parcels. Secondly, the program is focused on developing and promoting sustainable logistic solutions like electric vehicles and alternative fuels to reduce CO2 emissions and support the nation's efforts in dealing with climate change.?

PM GatiShaki is enabling rural connectivity with urban areas and focusing on required infrastructure to increase employment opportunities, support agricultural growth, and help farmers move their crops to respective markets at low cost.?

Conclusion

PM GatiShati is one of the flagship initiatives the union government took to strengthen the country's road and transport network by building a multi-modal transport infrastructure connected, leveraging cutting-edge technologies, and developing sustainable transport solutions to minimize logistic costs and making Indian products competitive in the global market.?

Moreover, the program also focuses on connecting rural areas with urban areas and developing the required infrastructure, increasing employment opportunities in rural areas, and improving their livelihoods. All in all, GatiShakti is the right step to make India an efficient and globally competitive economy.?
