Let’s Chat D2C - Shopify is Discontinuing Order Processing for Third-Party Checkouts
Shopify announced the end-of-life for third-party checkouts, starting October 2024.
Recharge Checkout/Bold Checkout
The biggest names in the subscription space, Recharge, and Bold, have thousands of merchants still using their legacy external checkout. These brands now have 18 months to plan and execute a transition to the Shopify checkout.

Braintree
This move essentially forces every subscription brand to stop using Braintree, something I’ve seen larger and larger merchants stick with because of the significantly lower CC fees. These brands must migrate their Braintree tokens to Stripe tokens and then migrate the Stripe tokens to Shopify tokens.

What I’m Thinking About This Week - 1 Year Post-Acquisition and Learning to Reinvent Yourself Continuously
It’s crazy to think it’s already been a year, but time flies when you’re having fun!?
1-Year Recap
Sometimes it’s easy to keep thinking about what’s next versus reflecting on all the progress and accomplishments. It’s only been a year, but it’s inspiring to look back at what has happened while knowing there is still so much more to come!
?? Sold my first company.
??? Celebrated the 1-year anniversary of the D2Z Podcast with more than 52 episodes aired!
?? Moved Bella and me across the country to Miami and bought my first place.
?? Started a newsletter that just passed its 40th edition, has over 6,500 subscribers, and just started taking sponsors.
?? Migrated one of the largest US DTC wine companies onto @Shopify Plus.
?? Built out a unified GTM strategy for the alcohol industry with our partners like Klaviyo, Recharge, Rebuy, Okendo, Gorgias, Malomo, and more.
?? But what's most exciting is seeing the combination of @DRINKS and @Electriq fulfilling our entire thesis behind WHY this acquisition and partnership made sense. Not only is the agency now supporting brands from some of the world's largest public alcohol companies, but in just seven months since launching the DRINKS App, we've already onboarded more than 200 merchants with no signs of slowing down.
What’s Coming
?? But this is just the beginning. Did I mention that the app is just phase 1 of our plan? It’s exciting when you can feel the momentum continue to swell, and it will be a fun next 12 months! Stay tuned for what's next. ??
Continuously Reinventing Yourself
One thing that has become abundantly clear to me in the past year is how important it is to have a growth mindset and not pigeonhole yourself into a specific skill set. A year ago, my average work day and responsibilities looked entirely different than what they are now. I was highly operational with the agency a year ago, building out processes and working within clients’ Klaviyo accounts. Today, my role with the agency has shifted (for the better) to be more focused on strategy, thought leadership, and enabling our VP, Alissa, to be as successful as possible. My primary responsibility has transitioned to overseeing a Shopify app - from building out Zendesk help docs to creating our HubSpot sales funnel. I’ve had to roll up my sleeves again and jump head-first into learning.

But that’s what makes it exciting. I’d get bored if it were any other way! There’s almost nothing that can’t be learned by Googling it or just trying it :)
