Plug the Leaks: Where’s Your Energy Going?
I’ve learned that energy doesn’t just disappear—it leaks. I used to think exhaustion came from doing too much. But lately, I’ve realized it’s not always the quantity of what I do—it’s where my energy is going without my permission.
Take cooking, for example. Years ago, I started doubling every recipe and freezing half. Why? Because I know there will be days when I don’t have the time or patience to cook, and having something ready saves me from decision fatigue (and takeout regret). It’s a small habit, but it prevents that all-too-familiar “what’s-for-dinner” drain at the end of a long day.
The same goes for how I handle my headspace.
I walk every day, and I don’t listen to podcasts, take calls, or use it as a time to “think through” work. I just…walk. I notice the trees, the birds, the feel of the air. I let my mind wander wherever it wants to go. And without fail, by the time I get home, my thoughts feel lighter—like I’ve emptied out the mental clutter that was quietly weighing me down. Then there’s the mundane stuff—the chores, the to-do lists, the things we have to do but don’t necessarily want to do. I used to grit my teeth through them.
Now?
I put on music.
It’s simple, but it completely shifts my mood. I can scrub a sink with mild resentment or with Aretha Franklin cheering me on. Same task, entirely different experience. These tiny shifts may seem small, but they add up. When we stop tolerating the unnecessary drains on our time, energy, and patience, we get more of ourselves back.
So here’s my question for you: Where is your energy leaking? What’s one small shift you can make this week to plug the drain?

Susan
