I’m in the UK & happy to accept connections from people worldwide. However, I am unlikely to do any direct business overseas. I also won't outsource anything overseas. I earn my living from the UK economy so I prefer to give business to people based in the UK.
When I receive a connection request from anybody outside the UK, I send them the following clear message:-
"Hello 'insert name', thanks so much for asking me to connect with you. I always accept connections & then find out how we can both help each other.
I can see you are based outside the UK. I’m not looking to do business overseas & I don't outsource any of my operations outside the UK.
Please can you let me know what inspired you to want to connect with me & how I can help you? Thanks for asking me to connect."
I’m always disappointed by the number of people who respond to that message in a way which shows they haven't read it!

7 年Hello Gary, this message was not an email, it was actually a private message in Linked In. Obviously, If I want to, I can remove the connection and block them. I don't think they were being malicious, just pretty stupid :-)

7 年Careful on clicking the unsubscribe - or similar links, often that is the purpose i.e. to download a virus or it might confirm your email is active and valid and thus is sold on as a "sucker list" for an alternative attack on you and your systems. - regards Gary K

7 年Couldn't agree more ~ I've recently been discussing the exact issue you raise Mark and whilst I haven't come to any specific conclusions (other than politely hitting the 'Ignore this request' and then making sure you also hit the 'I don't know this person' window that pops up) ~ I use a little 'qualifier' message (before accepting) that invites a response which will either show me that the person who would like to connect is genuinely interested in exploring mutually beneficial synergies or not. And with over 40 such LinkedIn requests in the last 3-4wks, it works!
