Unsung Heroes of Telangana

Nestled in the serene village of Nandikandi, in the Sadasivpet mandal of Sangareddy district, the Ramalingeswara Temple is a captivating yet often overlooked architectural gem.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple stands on the historic route connecting Hyderabad and Bidar. Its tranquil setting and stunning design make it a remarkable testament to Telangana’s rich heritage.

Some Glimpses into History & Architecture

  • The Ramalingeswara Temple, with its distinctive architecture and masterful sculptures, stands as a hidden gem of Telangana’s ancient temples, embodying both spiritual and artistic grandeur.
  • Constructed in the Kalyani Chalukya style, an inscription at the temple indicates its construction in 1014 CE, during the reign of King Vikramaditya V.

  • An inscription at the temple notes a donation of the village Kovvuru for its maintenance and the establishment of a Vedic school, symbolizing cultural and political independence.

  • The temple features a star-shaped ground plan consisting of the Garbhagriha, Antharala and a hall with porches on the east, north and south sides.
  • Exquisite carvings adorn every pillar and crevice, showcasing Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Narasimha, Varaha, Nataraja, Mahishasura Mardini, Saraswati & Gaja-Lakshmi along with Dikpalakas (guardians of directions) on each of the four ornamental pillars.

  • A large, highly ornate Nandi Bull made of polished black stone sits in the temple's interior, featuring an inscription on one of its paws, presumably the sculptor’s signature.

Fairs and Festivals

The Ramalingeswara Temple comes alive during Maha-Shivaratri and Kartika Purnima, drawing devotees with rituals rooted in Saiva Agamas, preserving its spiritual legacy.

Promoting this tranquil site could elevate it to a must-visit heritage destination, showcasing Telangana's glorious past and the artistic brilliance of the Kalyana Chalukyas.
